There are 125 days until Star Wars: The Force Awakens hits theaters, and it can’t come fast enough for this life-long fan of the franchise. Last week, J.J. Abrams played with my emotions like a fiddle as he revealed some very interesting information in an interview with Entertainment Weekly about the film’s cross guard lightsaber wielding villain, Kylo Ren.
Spoiler Alert at the jump
It turns out that Kylo Ren is what Abrams calls “Vader obsessive.” Also, Kylo Ren is not the character’s birth name and his parentage could be of great importance. If that wasn’t enough information to tickle your fancy, his name was given to him when he joined a group called the Knights of Ren…….. My mind is officially blown!
Who are the Knights of Ren?
Are they Sith lords, Sith worshipers, or are they the factional evolution of the dark side of the Force? One could argue that the Sith had their time, so it’s out with the old and in with the new. Do the Knights of Ren work for the Empire now known as The First Order, or do they merely help them when it fills their needs?
How about the name? Is Kylo’s name, “Ren” a title, just like “Darth” was for Vader? Is he the leader of this group or does he have a master that is pulling the strings? Maybe it’s Supreme Leader Snoke (Who I’ll bet the farm is really Darth Plagueis)?
As for his parents, well, the obvious guess is that he is Han Solo and Princess Leia’s son. However, unless his parentage is a mystery that is meant to be a big part of the film, being their kid is too easy of an answer. I believe there is a more elaborate story at play here.
I believe that Kylo Ren is the biological son of Princess Leia, however, he is not the offspring of Han Solo. In the first teaser trailer, the first words we hear from Andy Serkis’ Supreme Leader Snoke are “There’s been an awakening. Have you felt it?” The awakening refers to a new chosen one, and Leia would be the perfect recipient of a virgin birth required since she is force sensitive.
This would explain why Kylo Ren is a Darth Vader fanatic. He knows he has a special purpose, just like his grandfather before him. However, Anakin/Vader is dead and there is no one else that can fully comprehend or convey the burden that comes with being the chosen one, not even Luke Skywalker.
We could be looking a reversal of fortunes here because Vader started off good, but turned to evil. Kylo starts off evil, perhaps he brings the Force back into balance while coming over to the light side along the way.
I really wish I could sleep in a cryo chamber until December 18th. However, I think my wife would have a problem with that. Never the less, Kylo Ren, so far, has the makings of what could be the next great villain in cinema.
