The first UFC event of 2013 kicks off in Brazil as Michael Bisping vs. Vitor Belfort headlines the biggest main event on FX to date. The immediate future of the middleweight division hangs in the balance as one result determines Anderson Silva’s next opponent while another result puts the division in limbo.
The fight game can be a funny creature sometimes because promoters predict certain paths that are perceived to produce strong revenue at the box office. In this case, it is better for business if Michael Bisping wins.
A Bisping vs. Silva title fight, in England, would mean big business. He is a home grown product of the Ultimate Fighting Championship and has been pushed into the limelight since he won season three of “The Ultimate Fighter” reality show.
The British native has been placed in title shot winning scenarios before but always fell when needing to win. This is his last chance to win that pivotal fight in order get a shot at the gold.
Belfort may be at the beginning of the down slide of his career. If he beats Bisping, he will not get a title shot since Anderson Silva already knocked him out with the most impressive highlight reel front kick of all time.
“The Count” is a good technical striker that mixes up punches and kicks but he has little power behind his shots. He needs to avoid fundamental mistakes like circling into Belfort’s power and use his wrestling to take down Belfort and control the pace of the bout.
Belfort possess r with deadly speed, power and accuracy. Bisping’s wrestling has improved dramatically and even if he can take Belfort down, he might not be able to hold him down for long. Octagon control through rapid takedowns in secession may be his key to victory. Belfort’s BJJ is top notch so Bisping will have to avoid fundamental mistakes from top position as well.
This is the most important fight in Bisping’s career as victory brings about a date with destiny while defeat will grant him permanent residence in the role of gate keeper. In the end, Bisping will be a tall order but Belfort will find an opening and finish him with the old school Vitor flurry of punches.
Prediction: Vitor Belfort via KO in 3rd Round
