Newest Member of the WWE Hall of Fame Announced

The newest member of the WWE Hall of Fame was announced on Raw last night and the man who will get the honor is none other than the first black World Heavyweight Champion: Ron Simmons

Three weeks after losing the WCW Championship to Vader, Sting was scheduled for a rematch at a live event in Baltimore. However, due to an injury, Sting was unable to compete that night. Instead, WCW President Bill Watts decided to hold a raffle to determine a new No. 1 Contender, with the winner earning Sting’s chance to face Vader that night.

Ron Simmons won the raffle, going on to defeat Vader that night to claim the gold. With the victory, Simmons became the first African-American to win a World Championship. Several WCW Superstars, including “The American Dream” Dusty Rhodes, rushed to the ring to help Simmons celebrate his groundbreaking accomplishment.

After a brief stint in ECW, Simmons joined WWE in 1996 under the name Faarooq, and formed an aggressive faction known as The Nation of Domination. Mentoring members like The Rock and Mark Henry early in their careers, he played a significant role in shaping the future of WWE. After a falling out with The Great One, Faarooq went back to his real name and teamed with JBL as The APA. As tough as they come, the two drank beer, smoked cigars and raised a lot of hell while winning the World Tag Team Titles three times between 1999 and 2001.

  1. Hmm, Simmons is in this year, but no Savage and no Bruno. No offense to Simmons, because he was talented and a part of some good acts, but every year Vince manages to make a joke out of his own hall of fame by his choices for hall members.
